AUTHOR RANDY KINNAMON brings a Crow Indian legend to life in this twenty-first century Kindle Vella Young Adult adventure series, Dark Feather: In Your Dreams. It is the story of the teenaged son and daughter of a Crow Indian, absent father. After an accident during a junior high school science experiment gone awfully wrong, 12 year-old Trudy disappears and her 15 year-old brother Olin is arrested as a suspect.
During their adventures Olin and Trudy encounter a Native American dreamscape where the vivid dreams of others become their own dangerous reality. They must escape the dream world and return home before time runs out and they become trapped forever.
In late November Randy published the first three episodes of his new Kindle Vella story, Dark Feather: In Your Dreams. The fourth episode was published in mid-December, with a few more episodes due for release in January.
“When I lived in Eastern Montana from 1999 to 2002 I became deeply interested in the stories of the Absaroka (Apsáalooké in the native language) Nation, also referred to as Crow Indians because French interpreters called them ‘People of the Crow.’ Crow history has a rich heritage that few people seem to know.”
Dark Feather: In Your Dreams is an expansion and elaboration on a Crow Indian story about the last time that Red Woman was seen by anyone among the Crow. The story was told through an interpreter by a Crow medicine woman, Pretty Shield, more than ninety years ago.
“Red-woman was a bad person and yet she was the first woman to live on this world. . . . I have already told you that once my people caught her and tried to burn her. But the fire that chipped her bones when the rain fell upon them while they were very hot, did not kill her. She was afterward seen, and was finally captured a second time by my people; and this time she was drowned. . . . Shall I tell you the story? There is a man in it, or a boy who had the heart of a man. . . .”
